The Sand Castle
Mor and Nan have a lot of discussions about insignificant things. Nan obviously is the stronger one and Mor feels forced and offended all the time. Not even the children were able to form a bond between both of them. The heart of the matter is a love affair. Mor and Rain meet the first time at a diner with Demoyte. This is the first time that Mor feels this feeling which he cannot describe, is it love? He feels rather strange, confused, surprised.
Mor is a man who cannot take decisions, he is always doubting, doubting about his feelings for Rain, about leaving his wife, about becoming an MP.
Mor also has political ambitions, he wants to become a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party. He is interested but his wife is against the whole idea. Tim Burke, an old friend of the family, and Demoyte are pushing him, because they want him to do, for once, something that is against the will of his wife.
Few people knew about that, including rain. Mor is becoming an MP after all. Their lives go one the way they were before and nothing seemed to have changed. An agony: a situation or state that causes great suffering and unhappiness. A glance: a look. Austere: sober, simple.
